Looking towards Chiseldon after closure. Anyone doing an evening drive along the Swindon road during the mid-late 1960's would probably notice one or two bulk tipper lorries parked up in the station yard at Ogbourne. These belonged to Marlborough haulier D.W.Free and after loading coal at one of the Midlands or South Wales pits (prior to the Severn Bridge opening) the drivers would miraculously reach Ogbourne when their hours ran out, forcing them to stop and book a night out! In reality of course, the drivers would hitch a lift home to Marlborough, but still claim night-out money as a way of boosting their wages. Raising their log book would invariably stop the first passing lorry.

The GPO van which took the mail by road to Swindon station in the evening, following withdrawal of passenger services at Marlborough, could also be relied on to give Free's drivers a lift home.
